For a while I’ve been pressed to do this study by virtue of a personal inquiry. Didn’t know where to start because I didn’t want to consult the internet (plenty of junk), until my eyes of understanding were open to Genesis1:1-2
“Genesis 1:1-2
“[1]In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
[2]And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
The word “WAS” used in the above passage translates in Hebrew as “to become or a happening that succeeds an Initial occurrence”. This means earth became void in that there was fullness, so it became void of fullness.
The phrase “without form” translates in Hebrew as TOHU, which means to lay waste and in ruins, beyond the extentive classification. The word “void” translates in Hebrew as BOHU, which means emptiness. So the combination of tohu and bohu describes the state and chaotic condition in which earth was.
Isaiah 45:18 gives us insight as to why the earth was created which is to be inhabited and not empty, implying that God didn’t create it void(tohu). So we can suffice to say that before this void, there was fullness. What then happened to the fullness?
The verse2 of the scriptures above tells us that water covered the earth, such that while He(God) was recreating the earth he had to separate water from dryland (Genesis 1:10). Since God refers to earth as “dryland” in Vs10, Vs1 can be simply interpreted as “in the beginning God created the heaven and dryland”. So if God created dry land in verse 1, then had to move on waters which covered the dry land, it means that between vs1 and vs2 something tremendously took place which wasn’t recorded in the Bible, which I’ll call “the great flood” that wiped out some form of habitation before the time of recreation. This also gives us a clue on the procreation of earth, which was not done in immediate chronological succession of days, that is, the time expanse between vs1 and vs2 could have been several millions of years.
With this short explanation I’ll share my Brief findings:
1. The word “create” in Hebrew translates as “bara” which means “to bring into being”, it was used 7times from Genesis: 1-2. All other places in the procreation story, “made and make” were used, this proving that the 6days work(Gods’s work) was reconstructive work. Therefore the word “create
- bara” was reserved for the introduction of the 3 great cycles of existence:
- the world of matter
- the natural life, as in living things
- the spiritual life represented by man, His express image.
2. The command for Adam to replenish the earth in Genesis 1:28 suggests that the earth was filled at a time. The word REPLENISH in English means to “refill, add again, supply again, renew”. This further proves that the earth was at some point filled, but something led to total or partial emptiness, that needed refilling and replenishing. This same command was given to Noah in Genesis 6.
3. The earth was created to be inhabited according to Isaiah 45:18 and was inhabited immediately after creation. The flood which came afterwards was not a constructive one but destructive such that it left earth void and empty. The earth was flooded and cursed before the 6days recreation by God. This flood was a resulting effect of a curse (just like that of Noah), by virtue of Satan’s rebellion and curse down to earth.
Now Lucifer was a fallen creature in that he led a rebellion from earth to heaven and was cast down from heaven. He led this rebellion with the nations which were under his rule (isaiah14:12-14, Ezekiel 28:12-19). Lucifer was set over earth to rule it, protect it and overshadow it until sin came into his heart and he proposed to set his throne above the stars and on the mount of congregations. His rebellion led to the first flooding of the earth, before Noah.
Before Satan’s defeat he had a throne and therefore a kingdom and subjects to rule over. His kingdom was under the skies, under the heavens and under the clouds, therefore it was on earth (Isaiah 14:13-14). Therefore Lucifer’s invasion of heaven was done from earth.
4. In the New Testament we find that Peter spoke about a social system that was overthrown and wiped off before Adam.
2peter 3:5-7
“Vs4. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
vs5. Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
Vs6. But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word, are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the Day of Judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”
Here, two social systems are distinguished by Peter:
- The world that then was
- The earth which is now
The colon after vs5 leads to its explanation in vs6 of how the earth became filled with water which led to a perished world.
Therefore this exposes us to an understanding of the first flood which wiped away all of the habitation and social system before Adam, and a 2nd flood which wiped away some of the habitation but left some people to continue with the social system at the time (Noah and his family). The world that then was, utterly perished under the first flood.
He also highlighted 3 forms of destruction; the first flood, the second flood, and the third which is to come by fire (vs7).
The Bible doesn’t disclose what Composed the initial habitation and what transpired exactly in the preadamite world that led to its annihilation, but it gives us an insight as to its prior existence and what is to come.
We can at best give some skeptical answers to some of the scriptural questions like this that rise up, but there are still some questions left unanswered and which will remain so until the revealing of the lamb.
